Checklists for Students & Substitutes

Hey Hey Hey!
I recently took a mini-vacation this past weekend. I FINALLY used some personal days. Last year I wasn’t absent ONCE and this year would’ve been the same except my sweet man and I went to The Hangout Fest Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
It was AMAZING! I posted some pictures on my instagram. It wasn’t all crazy dub step electronica music haha. I saw the Foo Fighters, Spoon, My Morning Jacket, Foster the People, and a bunch of others. It was absolutely amazing and I’m ready to get back to a beach! 🙂

One of the main reasons I am never absent is because I DREAD substitute plans! Thinking about it, planning, printing, the whole sha-bang. It’s a nightmare! I recently the picture below on my Instagram, and it got a lot of love so I wanted to share with my bloggy friends as well!

To help my substitute and my students, I create checklists and packets for each student. I was going to be out for two days and needed enough material to keep my kiddos working. I make a checklist like the pictures below and told the students to complete the checklist in the order it is listed on the checklist. Students physically check off as they complete an assignment. This also makes it easier on me when I come back because I can see at a glance what they did not finish.
I place the substitute packets in a bin on my teacher desk. I tell my substitute to pick them up at the end of the day so none are lost. I LOVE that each student has a stapled packet…no more loose papers!
Since I was out for two days for the music festival, I had the students complete two assignments, then had a checklist say, “Complete anything from the first packet that you did not complete”.
Since I am at a 1:1 school, I had the students complete quizzes on Edmodo and time themselves to read for 20 minutes.
Staple task card recording sheets, or anything you need them to work on!
If you would like the checklist template that I use…

I hope this helps you when you next plan for a substitute!
